Tbh, if VisualStudio has a UWP version, I don't see the need of a win32 version. MS def has some responsibility but so do users and the HW provider they choose. Then maybe you need to educate them about clicking on everything they see. Thankfully most people i know seems to have got past that stage, even the younger ones and i have not had to sort out a machine with those problems for along time.

This limitation enables Microsoft to root out malware more efficiently and ensure a certain level of app quality, but it does limit what people can download and use. Windows 10 in S mode is a version of Windows 10 that Microsoft configured to run on lighter devices, provide better security, and enable easier management. The “S” doesn’t have a specific designation, but Microsoft generally surrounds it with words like security, streamlined, superior performance, and whatnot. Believe it or not, Microsoft serves up 12 versions of its Windows 10 operating system.

Editorial independence means being able to give an unbiased verdict about a product or company, with the avoidance of conflicts of interest. To ensure this is possible, every member of the editorial staff follows a clear code of conduct. Today, we have millions of users a month from around the world, and assess more than 1,000 products a year. Chrome OS works best with Google Drive, which includes Docs, Sheets and Slides.

These also contribute to reduce performance over time. Just uninstalling these will not do it because many stuff from these are left behind. This is why I always recommend buying signature edition PCs from Microsoft store. Microsoft should make 10S a free version of Windows. My parents have two Windows desktops that i recently set up to be used as shared/guest computers.
What Is Windows 10 or Windows 11 in S Mode?
It needs to meet some qualifications and go through a conversion process first. All Store apps run virtualized, with their own registry, appdata folder, install folder. Not too different to how somes PC games are ported to Mac using wrappers. Point is, every single app coming from the store is 100% self-contained, and uninstalling it clears everything about it from the device. Win 32 centenial apps are just repackaged into a virtualized container to sandbox any system changes.
Now that there will be Windows 10 Home S Mode, then we will see more S Mode PCs and potentially more cheaper PCs. Though I won't be surprised if that comes with compromises in the future when switching. Could be that you can't change the default browser, you can download other browsers but you can't change the default browser, or that you'll have the warning popup when installing apps outside the Store. The "faster" startup was assuming a Pro user was installing apps that auto-launch in the OS and run in the taskbar.

And, for another measure of security, users don’t have access to use command-line shells such as command prompt. Of course, you’re free to go to Google.com to get your searching done, but if you type a search into the Start Menu or the Edge URL bar, you’ll be directed to Bing and there’s no way to change it. Similarly, Chrome OS is locked to Chrome, but that’s no bad thing, as Chrome is the best web browser around. You’re not locked to Google search either, if you don’t want to be, with Chrome making it easy to change your default search engine. Windows 10 S also locks you to the Bing search engine on Edge by default. We can see why Microsoft has done this; it can curate the results on Bing to keep its users safe, which is all well and good – apart from the fact we don’t really rate Bing for much at all.

It will also receive the same updates at the same time as other versions of Windows 10. Until then you’ll be browsing the web using Microsoft Edge and even if Chrome or Firefox does become available, there’s currently no way to switch Edge from being the default browser. Instead all Windows 10 S software comes from the Windows Store. Microsoft rightly points out this should mean software is safer, a big deal for schools and businesses, but currently the Windows Store is a wasteland.
You’ll find the Microsoft Store by accessing your Windows 10 Start menu, and once the app is opened you can search tens of thousands of free and paid apps. It’s a bit like Apple’s iOS operating system on an iPhone or iPad, which only allows you to install apps from the App Store. But S Mode limits you to the Windows apps available in the Microsoft Store.

This allows you to create a completely separate sandbox environment virtually using Windows to test/observe unknown programs to ensure they’re not a threat or full of bugs that will hurt your computer. Windows 10 Pro adds another layer with additional security and features that support businesses of all types. Microsoft is now shipping Windows 10 PCs that use ARM processors. These computers have an emulation layer that allows them to run traditional Windows software. Offers a password-free sign in option to unlock your devices with your face or a fingerprint reader.
This helps Microsoft get Windows 10 S out onto more devices, and gives users the chance to upgrade without paying. Microsoft isn't even making it a default option for hardware makers. Instead, it's making S mode cheaper for hardware makers to preload onto new hardware. It isn't forcing hardware makers to use S mode, which means OEM partners like Dell and HP will likely continue to sell versions of their hardware with editions of Windows without S Mode.

Various other developer tools are also off limits. You don’t have direct access to the Windows Registry via the Registry Editor, either. Organize a number of different applicants using an ATS to cut down on the amount of unnecessary time spent finding the right candidate.
If you feel Windows 10 in S mode is not your cup of tea, you can easily switch to the full version by activating the Windows 10 full version through the settings. There are no charges for switching off of S mode; however, keep in mind that switching out is a one-way street. Once you have switched to the full version of Windows 10, you can’t go back to S mode. When you disable S mode, you can’t go back, and your phone will never have it again. Only run this procedure if you don’t ever want S mode. Search for Settings in the Start Menu’s search box, and select the result to open the window.
We recommend downloading this PC Repair tool (rated Great on TrustPilot.com) to easily address them. After installation, simply click the Start Scan button and then press on Repair All. Windows 10 S is a more powerful operating system than Chrome OS and is more flexible. However, having not yet used it on a cheap laptop, we can’t vouch for whether it’ll offer the same, snappy performance as Chrome OS. Chrome OS doesn’t have a dedicated email client; whatever email service you use will need a web-based interface in order for you to use it. Windows 10 S has a built-in email client that supports Office 365, Exchange, Outlook.com, Gmail, and Yahoo.
